I'm thinking of trying this. How much if at all did it quiet engine noise for you, and what do you think of the fact it's 5w instead of 20w when cold? Do you spend more time warming it up?

A 5w oil would require less warm-up since it flows more freely. The 5W isn't saying that it protects like a 5W oil when cold, but that it flows like a 5W when cold.

It should not be an issue with the Rotella T6 in 5W-40. I don't think there are any friction modifiers that screw with the clutch. The gold standard for any oil is the JASO-MA rating.

JASO is an acronym that stands for "The Japanese Automotive Standards Organization." If they rate it for moto it's good.

Shell Rotella T 15W-40 conventional oil does list on its packaging JASO MA as one of the specifications it meets. I have used in in bikes and it did work well as anyonther.

Note that the 10W-30 conventional oil does not list JASO-MA.

T6 5W-40 is a fully synthetic oil for what that's worth. In a high performance big twin that can't hurt either. Shell is a good brand for sure.

I will say the boat I work on had Northern Lights 32KW generators that have over 6000 hours on them with Rotella T15-40 conventional oil and we buy it in 5 gallon pails. I change it every 200 hours and it's always clean and tests out great for viscosity with UOA (used oil analysis)
I think I just like the happy yellow pails. Oil don't matter if you change it frequently. I do 4 or 6 changes a year on the genets.
If your an oil geek you have to check out Bob's The Oil Guy website for all things oil.

No Oil Wars anymore-Peace.....

Daz,
I've used it in my Suzuki vs1400 V-twin for years and started using it in the T-Bird on the second oil change. Shifting is very smooth, but I have not noticed that it quieted the engine much. Best oil for the money IMO. Meets all required specs, is readily available, and it's cheap.

My son run the conventional Rottella in his FJR. Apparently a lot of FJR riders run the stuff.

I agree with Fishy's comment - any quality motorcycle oil should be fine as long as you change it regularly. It is interesting that Triumph specifies a synthetic or semi-synthetic oil. It would be interesting to know why.

Me,me,me!! I've been using the Shell Rotella T 15/40 dino oil, since it was introduced and never a problem.Infact,I have NEVER used any motorcycle specific oil since I've been drivin two wheeler and NEVER had a problem. However,if motorcycle specific oil is what floats your boat, then by all means, stick with it. Dave!!!

+1 I'm with Dave on this one with one minor difference I use Rotella T-6 with no problems unlike Dave here. Dave just has an aversion to anything synthetic, he likes to keep them real..... I mean IT real.

Yeah, but when you ride like Dave you could use vegetable oil with good results.

You know Daz, I'm starting to get the feeling that Dave doesn't appreciate us very much. He's gett'n kind of cranky, maybe the TBird is just too much bike for a guy in his condition. We did try after all to recommend a bike or should I say form of transportation more his speed and ability but he pissed and moaned about that too! He's exhibiting signs of.....well you know....because he keeps buying tires and expecting different results? Now he's on to Brake pads, Sintered, Ceramic, Organic, good grief what's next Dave....synthetic....oh no that won't happen, we'll need Dino Brakes. Maybe a nice cup of Tea and Biscuits will help.

On our Tiger 1050 site there was a few who use Rotella T-6 and had Blackstone Labs do oil analysis. Several of them over time on the same bike/rider combo.
The T-6 was fine. Blackstone provided facts-something that oil threads can be short of from time to time.

I'd have no issues with using it in my bikes.
